Centre Mike Fisher was chosen as Ottawa's nominee for the Bill Masters Trophy.

Troubled by an elbow injury that only allowed him to play 21 games this season, Fisher, 23, underwent two surgical procedures — in August and October — and was sidelined again after a brief comeback in December.

He finally returned last month.

Off the ice, Fisher was named honorary chair of Roger's House, a home being built in memory of the late Senators assistant coach Roger Neilson, which will assist families of children stricken with cancer.

"It's a real honour to get nominated for an award like this," Fisher told the Ottawa Sun. "This has been a tough year for me. When you go through some of the things that I've gone through, it's not easy. There are things that you don't expect to happen and that makes it tough.

"What I've learned from all of this is that you have to work through it. It was tough when I first came back from the elbow surgery at Christmas and then I was injured again. I really wasn't sure (about playing this year). I didn't know what was going to happen. It's great to be back."
